The city of Trenton has been shaken by a series of violent incidents over the weekend, including three separate shootings and a hit-and-run, leaving residents and authorities on high alert.
Too many neighborhoods in Trenton are now besieged by crime, with bullets flying and burglaries terrorizing the families who call the city home but Governor Phil Murphy has not commented on the plight of these impoverished victims who seem to be abandoned by their government.
A Sunday evening shooting in Trenton has resulted in the death of one man and left another injured, according to Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri.
At approximately 5:52 p.m. on May 19, 2024, Trenton police were alerted by a ShotSpotter activation indicating multiple rounds fired and received several calls reporting two individuals shot near 2 Kingsbury Square.
The state’s political establishment remains accustomed to the barbarity that plagues city streets. Just about one year ago, Trenton city council members participated in a field trip to the financially strapped and much maligned Kingsbury Towers aka One Poverty Place.
Kingsbury Towers is a 364-unit affordable housing development in downtown Trenton, which is home to 1,000 Trenton residents, roughly one percent of the city’s population, including families, seniors, and veterans.
The Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department are currently investigating the incident.
Responding officers, along with fire and emergency services, located two 18-year-old males suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center.
Stephon Fisher, of Trenton, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The second victim, also a resident of Trenton, sustained three gunshot wounds and is in stable condition.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact MCHTF Detective Paulina Way at (609) 722-0170 or OIC William Jett Jr. at (609) 331-5010. Tips can also be emailed to mchtftips@mercercounty.org.
In a separate incident, Trenton Police are investigating a hit-and-run that occurred at approximately 5:39 p.m. on Saturday at 110 Calhoun Street. Officers responded to reports of a pedestrian struck and found an unresponsive male in his 40s at the scene.
The victim was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center and is currently listed in critical condition. The vehicle involved was not present when authorities arrived.
Preliminary investigations have raised questions about the nature of the male’s injuries, suggesting they may not be consistent with those typically resulting from being struck by a vehicle. The circumstances remain unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
Detective Lieutenant Lisette Rios, Public Information Officer, provided this information and encouraged anyone with details about the incident to contact the Trenton Police Department. Further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
