Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor and personal attorney to former president Donald Trump, was disbarred in New York for making false statements about the 2020 election.
A New York appeals court disbarred Giuliani because of his allegedly illegal participation in schemes intended to help Trump overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 election.
“The seriousness of respondent’s misconduct cannot be overstated,” said the state appeals court, in a ruling that found Giuliani “baselessly attacked and undermined the integrity of this country’s electoral process.”
Giuliani was previously suspended from practicing law in New York, where he was admitted to the bar in 1969.
The court ordered Giuliani to be “disbarred from the practice of law, effective immediately, and until the further order of this Court, and his name stricken from the roll of attorneys and counselors-at-law in the State of New York.”
A spokesperson for Giuliani did not respond to requests for comment.
Giuliani also faces potential disbarment in Washington, D.C., where his reciprocal suspension was triggered automatically by his suspension from practicing law in the state of New York.
Arizona’s Attorney General Kris Mayes served Giuliani an indictment along with 17 other defendants for an attempt to overturn Trump’s loss to Biden in the 2020 election in the state’s fake elector case.
Giuliani faces the same charges as the other defendants, including conspiracy, fraud and forgery charges.
The former New York mayor, was indicted in Georgia along with Trump and 17 others. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said they participated in a wide-ranging conspiracy to subvert the will of the voters there.
