Roselle hosts rally for Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s gubernatorial campaign

Residents from across Union County will gather at Heard African Methodist Episcopal Church at 308 East 8th Street in Roselle on Tuesday evening, May 27, for a grassroots rally in support of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s historic campaign for governor.

Roselle Democrats will host a high-energy rally in support of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s campaign for governor, at the event organized by Councilwoman Cynthia Johnson.

Johnson is a candidate in the June 10 Democratic primary, challenging another member of the governing body who was supported by the super PAC associated with Baraka’s rival, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop.

The rally aims to unify voters behind Baraka’s progressive, people-first candidacy, which has gained serious momentum heading into what many are calling New Jersey’s most consequential gubernatorial election in a generation.

With the race no longer dictated by “county line” ballot positions, grassroots energy is reshaping New Jersey politics — and Roselle is ready to lead that charge.

Baraka recently met with Union County ministers to discuss his gubernatorial campaign as part of his ongoing outreach in the history-making campaign for governor.

The event will feature Roselle Councilwoman Cynthia Johnson, Assemblyman Reggie Atkins, Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp, and Hillside Democratic chairman Anthony Salters, is expected to draw a standing-room-only crowd.

Set to begin at 6:30 p.m., the rally comes at a critical moment for both Roselle and New Jersey.

As the borough grapples with a dysfunctional local government — with key executive roles either vacant or occupied by temporary appointees — Johnson and Dupont are calling for a new era of leadership rooted in competence, service, and community empowerment.

“Our borough is in crisis,” said Johnson, referencing Roselle’s current dysfunction, including administrative vacancies, short-staffed departments, and a lack of transparency. “We can’t wait for Trenton to fix it.”

“We need leadership now — and Ras Baraka is the leader with the vision, courage, and coalition to deliver for all of us,” said Atkins.

“We’re building a movement — one rooted in justice, competence, and accountability,” said Mapp. “Ras Baraka inspires us because he’s walked the walk. He’s stood with the voiceless. He’s governed with both a heart and a backbone.”

Baraka, who is aiming to become New Jersey’s first Black governor, has emerged as the leading progressive voice in the race, backed by groups like New Jersey Working Families, SEIU 32BJ, and Make the Road Action.

His campaign is fueled by grassroots energy, bold policy, and a deep commitment to justice.

“This is about rising together,” Johnson said. “Ras Baraka represents the kind of leadership our communities deserve — and Roselle is ready to lead the charge.”

The rally is free and open to the public.

“All who believe in a more just, people-powered New Jersey are encouraged to attend and stand with Ras Baraka” said Salters.
