Trump just put 338,150 good-paying jobs and $24 billion on the chopping block

A new resource from Climate Power revealed that Trump’s decision to cancel or threaten billions of dollars in investments in both red and blue states across the country will put 338,150 good-paying jobs and over $23.88 billion in total grant awards on the chopping block.

These investments would have created more energy at a time when skyrocketing demand is sending utility bills through the roof.

Household electric bills are up 10% nationally since Trump took office, and they are rising at twice the rate of inflation.

“Republicans are fueling an energy crisis and inflicting a massive utility bill hike on Americans across the country,” said Climate Power senior adviser Jesse Lee. “This is nothing short of a betrayal of their own voters. Families are losing jobs while their bills climb, all because Republicans would rather protect their donors than lower costs.”

Now, Trump and Republicans are making it worse by laying off workers and spiking costs for American families.

In New Jersey, Trump has canceled or threatened four grants representing $80 million in investments.

BASF is set to lose $73.4 million from an Energy Department grant aimed at reducing carbon dioxide output.

Rutgers University is losing two Department of Energy awards worth nearly $5 million.

One is a $1,522,641 grant to protect farmland from non-agricultural development, while the other is a $3.2 million grant for information dissemination, outreach, and training, which will stimulate increased energy efficiency.

Princeton University engages in renewable energy research and development through its Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, the High Meadows Environmental Institute, and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

Trump is cutting nearly $2 million that Princeton intended to use to conduct interdisciplinary research on sustainable energy technologies.

“The Trump administration is not making America great; it is making America poor, weak, and beholden to the very polluters who have held our economy hostage for decades,” said New Jersey Democrat Lisa McCormick. “In an act of pure vindictive folly, this administration is callously destroying more than 300,000 good-paying American jobs.”

“Let us be clear: this is not fiscal responsibility. It is an act of economic sabotage, a deliberate kneecapping of our nation’s future to appease their masters in the fossil fuel industry,” said McCormick.

“By canceling hundreds of Department of Energy projects, President Trump is not saving money—he is wasting it,” said McCormick. “He is ripping away billions of dollars that were already flowing to communities in both Republican and Democratic states, funding that was building a stronger America through domestic manufacturing, a modernized grid, and a robust, homegrown energy supply.”

“Canceling a project that is already underway is the most expensive choice you can make,” said McCormick. “It kills jobs, drives up future costs, and tells the world that America is no longer a reliable partner for investment. This is not strength; it is a stunning display of weakness and short-sightedness.”

“The American people must see this betrayal for what it is,” said McCormick. “It is profoundly disappointing that New Jersey’s representatives in Congress are not fighting for every job, for every dollar of investment, and for a future that is built by American hands, while they are being sold off to the highest bidder.”

“Are Americans better off than they were before Trump took office? Not if pink slips and utility bills are the measure,” said Climate Power Communications Director Alex Glass. “Every single Republican member of Congress needs to answer for the damage Trump has done to their communities. His cuts to clean energy projects put over 330,000 jobs on the chopping block and will raise household utility bills all to line the pockets of his billionaire oil donors.”

Trump is using American jobs as bargaining chips – and it’s hurting red and blue states.
