Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell’s daughter cashing in on father’s clout as lobbyist

The daughter of New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale G. Caldwell has joined a prominent Trenton lobbying firm, a move that positions her at the intersection of state influence and her father’s role in the administration of Governor Rebecca ‘Mikie’ Sherrill.

Ashley Caldwell has been hired as a government affairs associate at Capital Impact Group (CIG), a bipartisan public affairs firm that boasts “access to key decision-makers” in New Jersey government.

The announcement comes as her father serves as the state’s fourth lieutenant governor and 35th secretary of state, overseeing the New Jersey Department of State and serving as the state’s chief election officer.

Ashley Caldwell previously served as an intern at the firm. In its announcement, CIG praised her legislative research and policy analysis, stating that she was a “natural fit” for the full-time role.

The appointment highlights the deep ties between the Caldwell family and the New Brunswick political and civic establishment. Lt. Gov. Caldwell served 26 years on the New Brunswick Board of Education, six of those years as its president, a tenure that established his legacy in local civic life.

His path to the state’s second-highest office is rooted in decades of public service and consulting. After earning an MBA from the Wharton School, Caldwell worked in the public-sector health care practice at Deloitte Consulting from 1988 to 1999.

He left to become the founding executive director of the Newark Alliance, focusing on education and economic development. He later served as assistant commissioner and eventually deputy commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs under Gov. Jim McGreevey from 2003 to 2005.

The younger Caldwell’s rapid transition from intern to full-time lobbyist at a firm that interacts with state officials raises questions about the intersection of family legacy and political access.

Dale Caldwell is part of a network of government officials, political organizations, and public institutions centered in Middlesex County.

Long associated with the New Brunswick political establishment, Caldwell spent decades building relationships in a county where Democratic leaders have exercised extraordinary influence over municipal government, county government, public authorities, patronage and state politics.

Now, his daughter will make her living in an industry where relationships with those same government decision-makers are a principal commodity.

CIG is a bipartisan firm that works with state leaders and officials, including connections to the New Jersey General Assembly Majority Office.

Ashley Caldwell did not respond to a request for comment, nor did a representative for Capital Impact Group. A spokesperson for the lieutenant governor did not immediately respond to questions regarding potential conflicts of interest.
