Trenton fire killed two children, destroyed home, displaced four families

A tragic fire claimed the lives of a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, while an adult male in the home managed to escape unharmed when a fire ripped through a home in Trenton, New Jersey, on Wednesday morning, officials say.

The front of the house is charred, and officials say the interior is completely destroyed. The flames also spread to an adjoining building.

One firefighter was treated at the scene and released, while another was hospitalized with non-life-threatening burns to his leg.

Calls first came in before 4 a.m. with reports of people trapped, Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Rice said. The impacted home is on the 300 block of Hewitt Street.

The children killed are a 7-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy. An adult male was also in the home and was able to get out safely.

After firefighting efforts concluded, Rice said the home is “completely destroyed” on the inside.

Rice said the firefighter was treated for burns to one of his legs.

Four families have been displaced, and the American Red Cross is on-site offering help. Fire marshals are investigating to determine the cause of the blaze.
