Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne Tha God tells Biden: “Step Aside” for the “Ultimate Christmas Gift”

Charlamagne Tha God, co-host of the popular radio show “The Breakfast Club,” has urged President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, calling it the “ultimate Christmas gift” for the nation.

The comedian, who has been critical of the 81-year-old president in the past, made the remarks Wednesday while filling in as the guest host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.”

The radio personality, whose real name is Lenard McKelvey, said, “I know he thinks he’s got this in the bag, but the polls say otherwise.”

Biden’s approval ratings have remained low for months, prompting some to question his ability to secure a second term. Charlamagne expressed concern, comparing the situation to a bar fight.

“I want Biden stepping into beat [former President Trump] the way I want him stepping in to defend me at a bar fight. I appreciate you caring, but I don’t like our chances.”

He drew parallels between Biden and the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who remained on the court until her death in 2020. “The point is, we don’t need Biden to beat Donald Trump just like we didn’t need [Ginsburg] to stay on the court,” Charlamagne argued.

He suggested that Ginsburg’s retirement during the Obama administration might have prevented the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year. “Maybe if RBG had retired during the Obama years, we’d still have Roe v. Wade,” he said. “But people said, ‘No, she needs to be here to protect Roe.’ And now look, both of them are gone.”

Charlamagne concluded with a direct message to the president, highlighting his age, low approval ratings, and lack of a new running mate. “So please, Mr. President,” he pleaded, “give America the ultimate Christmas gift and step aside.”

Charlamagne’s comments come as speculation about Democratic contenders for the 2024 race continues to grow.

Charlamagne cited Biden’s old age and poor polling for reasons he isn’t the best bet to beat former President Donald Trump, the 2024 GOP presidential primary front-runner.

Biden reportedly admitted at a closed-door fundraiser this week that if Trump weren’t in the race, he isn’t sure he would be running.

But Biden also said this week in response to a reporter’s question, he believes “probably 50” other Democrats could top Trump while also vowing to defeat him himself.

Charlamagne confronted Biden before he was elected and said he believed “Democrats take black voters for granted.”

The radio show host pressed Biden on some of his past positions, such as his support of the so-called crime bill of 1994 — the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act — which many criminal justice advocates argue encouraged mass incarceration of people of color.

“Vote’s a quid pro quo, right? It’s not like I don’t want to vote,” he told Biden. “I just want to know what candidates will do for us and in exchange for our votes.”

During the exchange in 2020, he probed Biden about criminal justice, drug issues, his choice of running mate and what the Democratic Party owed black voters for their overwhelming, lasting support.

Biden’s strength among black voters dramatically reversed his fate in early March after losing a string of primary races against Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders — leading to a series of victories that drove Sanders from the race.

Charlamagne Tha God told Biden that black voters had “saved your political life.”

But the headline-grabbing moment came when Biden said that he had to end the interview.

“You can’t do that to black media,” said Charlamagne Tha God, who invited Biden to return to the show for another interview at The Breakfast Club’s New York City studio. “It’s a long way until November, we got more questions.”

“You got more questions, but I tell ya, if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black,” Biden said.

“It don’t have nothing to do with Trump, it has to do with the fact I want something for my community,” Charlamagne Tha God replied.

Biden replied: “Take a look at my record man. … I have a record that is second to none.”
