Post-pandemic economic conditions ‘burst the balloon’ as festival on hiatus

Dreams of floating above the New Jersey meadows in a rainbow-colored hot air balloon might have to wait another year.

The New Jersey Festival of Ballooning, a summertime staple for 40 years, has announced a one-year hiatus in 2024 to “reimagine and relaunch” the event for an even grander return in 2025.

Organizers at The Festival Group say the decision wasn’t an easy one, but the post-pandemic landscape has “burst their balloon of normalcy,” making it difficult to maintain the festival’s high standards at affordable prices.

Soaring inflation, supply chain disruptions, and skyrocketing fees for musical talent have all contributed to the temporary grounding.

“Since 1992, we’ve proudly kept New Jersey families aloft with affordable, first-class fun,” said Festival Executive Producer Howard Freeman. “But the pandemic burst our balloon of normalcy, with inflation, supply chain woes, and skyrocketing musician fees making it impossible to maintain our quality without impacting affordability. This isn’t goodbye, it’s a strategic refuel for a spectacular comeback in 2025.”

While the news might sting for die-hard balloon fans, the organizers assure it’s a calculated move, not a permanent grounding. “We understand this might deflate some spirits,” Freeman acknowledged, “but this hiatus lets us soar back in 2025 with a reimagined, revitalized festival that’s even more magical than ever.”

The team is already brainstorming ways to optimize the festival experience, seeking new partners and investors, and laying the groundwork for a triumphant relaunch.

While the 2024 skies will be balloon-less, fans can stay tethered to updates through the festival’s website and social media, eagerly awaiting the day the vibrant hues return to paint the Readington sky in 2025.

For now, the organizers urge fans to hold onto their love for the festival, knowing that like a deflated balloon, it’s just waiting for the right moment to reinflate and fill everyone’s hearts with joy once again.

The 2024 hiatus might put a temporary damper on summer fun, but it also promises an even more spectacular festival experience in 2025. So chin up, balloon lovers, and get ready to soar to new heights when the colorful armada returns!

Since 2020, the festival has experienced enormous increases in operational costs from inflation and supply chain disruptions. It has also had increased fees for musical talent.

The increased costs are happening across the festival industry, Freeman said.

“In order to properly address these challenges, we have made the difficult decision to take a one-year hiatus to reimagine and relaunch the festival in 2025,” Freeman said in the news release.

The Festival of Ballooning celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023, and Freeman has run the festival since he purchased it in the fall of 1992.
