Lisa McCormick, a prominent anti-establishment Democrat known for her advocacy on progressive issues, has criticized New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy for what she calls a disingenuous support for a “Medicare for all” system.

“First Lady Tammy Murphy must think that Medicare for all supporters are stupid if she believes we are going to fall for her transparent attempt to tell us what we want to hear,” said McCormick, who earned nearly four of ten votes cast in the 2018 U.S. Senate race, when Murphy and her husband contributed $10,800 to Bob Menendez.

McCormick highlighted Murphy’s past political contributions, including donations to Republicans during a time when healthcare issues were pressing, suggesting a lack of genuine commitment to progressive healthcare policies.

“Tammy Murphy gave $95,000 to Republicans in 2024, when President George Bush was advocating trillion dollar giveaways to pharmaceutical companies and allowing private health insurance companies to scam Medicare beneficiaries, in addition to his scheme for gambling Social Security on the stock market,” said McCormick. “According to data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, prescription drug spending in the United States reached $535 billion in 2018, representing a significant increase from the $188.5 billion spent on medications in 2004.”

“There is absolutely no evidence that Tammy Murphy honestly supports Medicare for all and plenty of reason to believe she is simply telling voters what her pollsters are informing her that we want to hear,” said McCormick, who made her comments in response to remarks by Murphy criticizing her opponent, Rep. Andy Kim, for his opposition to Medicare for all. “That is what her husband did when he bought the Democratic nomination for governor and that’s exactly the kind of duplicitous behavior that has turned off so many Americans, who really should be more actively engaged in the political system.”

Murphy’s advocacy for the policy has raised eyebrows given her previous lack of vocal support for similar initiatives.

“Tammy Murphy did not support Bernie Sanders in 2016 or 2020, despite his groundbreaking advocacy of Medicare for all,” said Lisa McCormick. “Tammy Murphy did not support me, or Russell Cirincione, Hector Oseguera, Dr. Arati Kriebich, Zina Spezakis, Eugene Mazo, John Flora, or any other candidate who made Medicare for all a fundamental part of their platform.”

McCormick’s statement underscores the skepticism surrounding Murphy’s newfound support for Medicare for all, questioning the authenticity of her commitment to progressive healthcare reform.

Murphy, the wife of Gov. Phil Murphy, attacked Kim over his non-endorsement of Medicare for all legislation during a Sunday night debate that excluded two genuine universal health care advocates — Lawrence Hamm and Patricia Campos-Medina — because their campaigns lack big money.

“I blame voters for not being more perceptive and demanding,” McCormick said. “Andy Kim has not been on the side of angels, but while he seeks to confound audiences with nonsensical claims about being willing to support a ‘single-payer or multi-payer system’ Tammy Murphy’s lies are a little more insulting.”

Murphy and Kim are seeking to succeed Menendez, whom they both supported when he was challenged by McCormick in the 2018 Democratic primary.

As the U.S. Senate race heats up, issues of healthcare policy are expected to remain at the forefront of the debate.
