Cops caught a couple of cocaine conspirators, called them to court

Two brothers from Miami, Florida, have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiring to distribute and possessing with intent to distribute 49 kilograms of cocaine.

Nelson Santos Munoz, 30, and his brother, Amauris Santos Munoz, 31, appeared before U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi in Trenton federal court on March 5, 2024.

The indictment follows an incident on January 26, 2023, when law enforcement stopped a vehicle in Woodbridge, New Jersey, carrying the Santos brothers and another individual.

During a search of the vehicle, approximately 49 kilograms of suspected cocaine were discovered, individually wrapped in packages within suitcases and a backpack.

Investigations revealed that the Santos brothers had traveled to the Dominican Republic, where they conspired to purchase cocaine for distribution in the United States.

Subsequently, they imported the cocaine into the United States and traveled from Florida to New Jersey with the intent to distribute the narcotics.

Each count against the brothers carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison, with a maximum potential penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of up to $10 million.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Cheryl Ortiz, New Jersey Division, for the investigation leading to the charges. The Woodbridge Police Department also provided assistance in the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Farhana C. Melo of the OCDETF/Narcotics Unit in Newark is representing the government in this matter.

Sellinger said it’s important to note that the charges and allegations contained in the indictment are accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
