In an email sent out by the Tom Kean for Congress campaign, voters were confronted with misleading information that disparaged President Joe Biden ahead of his State of the Union address and misrepresented the facts about the condition of the nation over the past four years.

The email, which falsely claimed that crime had spiked, terrorists had entered the country through the border, and families struggled to afford basic needs under Biden’s administration, has been met with scrutiny and condemnation.

The email, sent out to potential supporters, made bold claims about the supposed failures of the current administration that are refuted by a detailed analysis conducted by the Council on Criminal Justice, which paints a starkly different picture of the crime trends in American cities over the past year.

According to the analysis released on January 25, 2024, homicide and most other violent crimes actually declined in American cities in 2023.

The study, which examined a dozen crime trends in 38 cities, found that the number of homicides fell by 10% compared to 2022. This represents a significant decrease and one of the biggest single-year drops since modern record-keeping began in 1960.

Furthermore, the analysis revealed that while some crimes such as motor vehicle theft continued to spike, others like shoplifting, drug offenses, and domestic violence incidents saw increases.

However, it is crucial to note that the spike in crime occurred while disgraced former President Donald Trump was in the White House, largely as a result of the murder of George Floyd, and such offenses are influenced by a multitude of factors beyond the actions of the current administration.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has published information showing that the inflation rate started rising in May 2020, also while Trump was still in charge.

Congressional Republicans raised the debt ceiling three times and added $8.4 trillion to the national debt during Trump’s four years in power, triggering the inflationary cycle.

The email’s assertion that Biden opened up the border, allowing criminals and identified terrorists into the country, perpetuates lies promulgated by Kean’ Jr and’s political ally, crackpot Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The Republicans refused to approve legislation tightening the border.

In response to the misleading email, experts and analysts have emphasized the importance of basing political messaging on facts and evidence rather than spreading misinformation.

The Council on Criminal Justice, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing the understanding of policy challenges, provided an authoritative analysis that contradicts the claims made in the campaign email.

It is essential for voters to critically evaluate the information presented to them by political campaigns and hold candidates accountable for the accuracy of their statements. Misleading and disrespectful messaging not only erodes trust but also undermines the integrity of the democratic process.

As the campaign season progresses, it is incumbent upon all candidates to engage in honest and respectful dialogue that focuses on the issues facing our communities and the nation as a whole.

Misrepresenting facts and resorting to disrespectful rhetoric only serves to further divide and polarize voters, hindering meaningful progress and solutions to the challenges we face.
