Lisa McCormick to congressional physicians: “Heal Thy Healthcare Policies!”

New Jersey Democrat Lisa McCormick called on the 19 physicians serving in the United States Congress, and all the other lawmakers, to throw their support behind a single-payer Medicare for All health insurance system.

“It is puzzling and frustrating that none of the doctors in Congress are currently supporting the obvious solution to curing our sick health care system,” said McCormick, who championed Medicare for All during her 2018 campaign for the Democratic US Senate nomination. “There is an urgent need for universal healthcare coverage in the United States.”

“Enacting Medicare for All would save $650 billion plus 68,000 lives per year,” said McCormick. “Instead of turning welfare recipients into slave labor, fiscal conservatives in Congress should embrace universal healthcare.”

“Medicare is a government-run insurance system that works better than money-making schemes peddled by greedy private corporations,” explained McCormick. “For-profit insurance companies are not just spending millions of lobbying dollars to kill Medicare for All legislation; the industry is using political bribery to harm Americans.”

McCormick’s call for Medicare for All comes amidst data showing that despite widespread public support for universal coverage like most industrialized nations have had for decades, all 19 physicians serving in the United States Congress are opposed to a single-payer system.

The core principles of Medicare for All include universal coverage, no premiums or deductibles, free choice of doctor and hospital, and comprehensive healthcare access for all Americans.

“It seems to conflict with the Hippocratic Oath’s first commandment, to do no harm,” said McCormick highlighting the disparity between public opinion and the stance of the medical establishment.

“The majority of doctors in most polls support single-payer,” she noted. “However, the American Medical Association has historically opposed it, reflecting a misalignment between profiteering providers and public needs.”

McCormick has been gathering support for Medicare for All using an online petition.

“The current system discriminates based on your ability to pay, what kind of job you have, or if you have a job at all. It’s a disgrace,” said Nancy Hagans, RN and member of National Nurses United’s council of presidents, echoing McCormick’s sentiments. “As a nurse, I know without any doubt — we must have Medicare for All.”

Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Pramila Jayapal have introduced legislation to establish Medicare for All, stressing the fundamental right to healthcare for all Americans.

“In America, your health and your longevity should not be dependent on your bank account or your stock portfolio,” said Sanders.

“There is a solution to this health crisis — a popular one that guarantees health care to every person as a human right and finally puts people over profits and care over corporations,” said Jayapal. “That solution is Medicare for All — everyone in, nobody out.”
