Two fatal explosions rock Middlesex County within a day of each other

Authorities in Middlesex County are grappling with the aftermath of a second fatal explosion within a span of 24 hours, this time in the Borough of South River.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Mark Tinitigan of the South River Police Department jointly announced the investigation into the incident, which claimed the life of one individual and left another seriously injured.

The explosion, which occurred around 7:03 PM on May 2, 2024, rocked a residence on Continental Court, prompting swift responses from emergency services.

Continental Court is located off Leonardine Avenue, near Kamm Avenue.

Upon arrival, officials discovered two male victims, both of whom had suffered serious injuries due to the blast.

The 2,387 sqft home had an estimated value of $772,800, before the devastating explosion. It had last sold for $250,500 in 1999.

Tragically, one of the victims, identified as Kevin Gilbert, 62, of South River, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The other victim was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Gilbert was a resident of South River and a retired member of the Newark police force.

The incident marks the second fatal explosion in Middlesex County within a short timeframe, following an explosion at Superior Signal Company in Old Bridge less than 10 miles away from South River, reported just over 24 hours prior.

The proximity in time and geography has intensified concerns and investigations into the cause of both explosions.

While foul play is not currently suspected in the South River incident, authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the explosion.

This includes examining whether there might be any connections between the two incidents.

The aftermath of the explosion on Continental Court paints a stark picture of destruction. The force of the blast completely leveled one home and inflicted damage on neighboring properties.

The scene witnessed the roof of the home blown off, walls shattered, and debris strewn in all directions. The impact was felt throughout the cul-de-sac, with every residence experiencing some degree of damage, from shattered windows to structural compromises.

As investigations continue, authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the process. Detective Patrick Molina of the South River Police Department and Detective Matthew Colonna of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office can be reached at 732-238-1000 and 732-745-3354, respectively.
