In a recent interview with Time magazine, President Joe Biden suggested that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be extending the conflict in Gaza for political reasons. The interview, conducted on May 28, comes shortly before Biden outlined a proposal for a ceasefire in the region.
When questioned about the possibility of Netanyahu prolonging the war for his own political interests, Biden remarked, “There is every reason for people to draw that conclusion.” Biden has been advocating for an end to the nearly eight-month war and has expressed concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
Biden also addressed allegations of war crimes in Gaza, stating that it is “uncertain” whether Israeli forces have committed such acts. He denied claims that Israel is using starvation as a method of warfare but acknowledged, “I think they’ve engaged in activity that is inappropriate.”
The Israeli government responded critically to Biden’s remarks.
Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer said Biden’s comments were “outside the diplomatic norms of every right-thinking country.”
This controversy arises amid significant political turmoil in Israel. Opinion polls indicate that while most Israelis support the war effort, they also hold Netanyahu accountable for security lapses and would vote him out of office if elections were held.
Mass Israeli protests have become a common occurrence, with tens of thousands demanding more decisive action to secure the release of hostages and calling for Netanyahu’s resignation.
Adding to Netanyahu’s challenges, the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor in The Hague has recently requested arrest warrants for him and his defense chief over alleged war crimes.
Biden also drew parallels between Israel’s current situation and the United States’ response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, cautioning against the potential for “endless wars.” He remarked, “And they’re making that mistake.”
The situation remains highly volatile as both domestic and international pressures mount on the Israeli government to find a resolution to the ongoing conflict, but Biden faces more dire political consequences as he heads into a rematch with the convicted criminal Donald Trump, a neo-fascist Republican who remains ahead in most polls.
