The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has announced charges against Sonia Salazar, a 63-year-old resident of Newark, in connection with a hit-and-run incident that seriously injured a pedestrian in Kearny on May 30, 2024.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, Salazar faces multiple charges including Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1), Endangering an Injured Victim (N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2a), and Causing Serious Injury While Driving on a Revoked/Suspended License (N.J.S.A. 2C:40-22b).
Salazar was taken into custody at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on June 6, 2024, and subsequently released pending her first court appearance, which is scheduled for June 20, 2024.
The incident took place around 7 a.m. on May 30, at the intersection of Kearny Avenue and Columbia Avenue. Kearny Police Department officers responded to a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.
Upon arrival, they found a 76-year-old male resident of Kearny with serious injuries. The vehicle involved had fled the scene. The injured pedestrian was transported to University Hospital in Newark by Emergency Medical Services for treatment.
The charges against Salazar are accusations, and she is presumed innocent until proven guilty, as per legal standards.
