Residents are bracing for a scorching heat wave that will bake New Jersey

A brutal heat wave will bake New Jersey all week, with the potential for record-breaking temperatures from Tuesday to Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

New Jersey residents are bracing for a scorching week ahead as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an excessive heat watch for the region.

With temperatures forecasted to reach the low to mid-90s and heat index values making it feel even hotter, authorities are urging the public to take precautions.

The detailed forecast predicts a high of 91°F today with minimal wind and few clouds, offering little relief from the heat. Tonight, temperatures will remain around 65°F, ensuring a warm and uncomfortable night.

On Juneteenth, temperatures are expected to rise to 93°F under mostly sunny skies with calm winds turning south at around 5 mph in the afternoon. Wednesday night will see patchy fog developing after 2 a.m., with partly cloudy conditions and lows around 65°F.

Thursday will mark the first official day of summer with highs near 94°F and patchy fog in the morning. The night will be partly cloudy with temperatures dropping to around 70°F.

Friday will be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures soaring to 98°F and a heat index possibly exceeding 100°F. There is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. The heat advisory will remain in effect, emphasizing the need for residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

The weekend will continue to be hot, with highs near 93°F on Saturday and a similar chance of afternoon thunderstorms. The excessive heat watch remains in place through Sunday, with highs around 92°F and a chance of storms.

An air quality alert has also been issued due to elevated ozone levels, adding another layer of concern for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children, and those with respiratory conditions.

The NWS advises all residents under the heat watch to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned environments, and check on relatives and neighbors, especially those at higher risk. Additionally, it is crucial to never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as interior temperatures can quickly become lethal.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and warnings as the week progresses to stay informed about any changes or updates to the heat advisory and excessive heat watch.

When the weather is hot and you find yourself sweating much more, you’ll need to replenish the water your body loses as you perspire.

It’s essential to stay hydrated throughout the day to regain the water and vitamins your body needs to handle the heat, so keep a bottle or canteen of cold water handy wherever you go. Be sure to refill your pet’s water bowl as needed, too.

If you need more incentive to sip something cool, remember that a cold drink can also feel refreshing on a hot day.
