A good week for Trump is an ominous danger to the world

By James J. Devine

Disgraced former president Donald Trump has had a good week, surviving an assassination attempt and having his federal indictments jeopardized by a bizarre ruling by a judge the Republican defendant appointed.

The dismissal of his stolen classified documents case by federal District Judge Aileen Cannon makes it almost impossible to resolve his criminal charges before voters cast ballots.

In her 93-page order, Cannon decreed that prosecutor Jack Smith’s appointment violates two clauses of the U.S. Constitution controlling how the federal government appoints and approves “Officers of the United States” and how they can use taxpayer money.

Appeals are likely to land the case before the Supreme Court, which is off until October and constituted of six radical Republicans, some of whom are on the payroll of right-wing billionaires.

Cannon’s order came on the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump will be nominated as the GOP presidential candidate for his third time.

It followed an attempted assassination Saturday at a Pennsylvania rally in which Trump was injured but spared having had his brains splattered by about two inches.

These events have disposed of the discussion of Project 2025, a blueprint to convert the republic into a right-wing extremist dystopia, a haven for the ultra-wealthy and a puritanical dictatorship that was written by fanatical anti-government religious zealots.

After being hit by a sniper’s bullet, Trump will exploit this historic opportunity to bring the country together behind his reckless, reactionary and radical agenda.

Project 2025 is an explicit wish list for an ultra conservative nightmare that almost all Americans would reject. The Trump administration has been an example of dichotomy.

His call to destroy the ruling class and deep state is backed by measures to enhance the privilege of the wealthiest one percent by reinforcing the power of government forces that remain unaccountable to the public.

Trump’s agenda will create a few winners and a whole lot of losers but his political appeal is designed to attract people who are squarely among the latter group.

Biden and the Democrats are not going to succeed against the Trump Republicans in 2024, even if they blindly refuse to acknowledge reality.

Democrats should replace President Joe Biden as the nominee (but not with Vice President Kamala Harris) and campaign on the Republicans’ designs to outlaw abortion, birth control, and blowjobs.
