President Joe Biden called disgraced former president Donald Trump a “loser” during his Democratic National Convention (DNC) speech after Vice President Kamala Harris arrived on the stage for the first time to a standing ovation from the roaring crowd.
Biden spoke to Trump’s characterizations of the United States as a country in decline and said: “He says we’re losing. He’s a loser. He’s dead wrong.”
Biden tore into Trump, saying “he never built a damn thing.”
“Folks, how can we have the strongest economy in the world without the best infrastructure in the world?” Biden, who signed a bipartisan infrastructure package into law during his term, told the crowd.
“Donald Trump promised infrastructure week every week for four years, and he never built a damn thing.”
Most of Biden’s speech described his administration’s achievements, from bringing the country back from the coronavirus pandemic to investing in infrastructure.
He was also mindful of crediting his vice president and now-Democratic presidential nominee, telling the crowd — after more chants of “Thank you, Joe!” broke out — to say “thank you, Kamala, too.”
Biden got an emotional reception during his appearance on the first night of the DNC, when former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made appearances on stage, eliciting loud cheers from the crowd.
Harris’ arrival came ahead of Hillary Clinton’s address and President Joe Biden’s speech.
The roster of speakers ran longer than the planned time, pushing Biden’s keynote speech out of prime-time hours on the East Coast.
Biden leaned into his pro-union credentials, touting being the first sitting president to walk the union picket line.
“You know what it’s like when that factory closed, where your mother, your father, your grandmother, grandfather worked, and now you’re back providing once again, proving Wall Street didn’t build America, the middle class built America, and unions – unions built the middle class!” Biden said.
“That’s why I’m proud. I’ve been the first president to walk a picket line and be labeled most pro-union president in history,” he said to the crowd which responded with chants of “union Joe.”
Biden was referring to last September when he joined United Auto Workers striking in Michigan.
