The polls revealed that voters reward being prepared and qualified for the nation’s highest office instead of showing up with bizarre lies from the internet and a loose grip on reality.
Democratic U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris leads Republican Donald Trump 47% to 42% in the race to win the Nov. 5 presidential election, increasing her advantage after the disgraced former President embarrassed himself with a bizarre and incoherent debate performance.
An earlier debate allowed Trump to score a major victory against the incumbent president but voters largely think Harris mopped the floor with the Republican in was a reversal of fortune, that made the only ex-commander in chief convicted of a crime a victim of his own success.
Comedians and political adversaries are still laughing about Trump’s racist screed amplifying false internet rumors about pet-eating migrants, which is only the latest insulting display of his xenophobic disdain for others.
“They’re eating the dogs,” Trump foolishly cried, repeating a lie that was thoroughly debunked after his vice presidential running mate posted the nonsense on social media.
By the time Trump spread an unsubstantiated and racially charged rumor about Haitian immigrants “eating dogs” and “eating the cats” on Tuesday night, the baseless claim had been thriving in right-wing corners of the internet and anyone with half a brain knew that it was a lie.
According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that closed on Thursday, Harris earned a solid boost in the polls compared to the tight race this appeared to be going in.
“In Springfield they’re eating dogs,” Trump said, referring to an Ohio city dealing with an influx of Haitian immigrants. “They’re eating the cats. They’re eating … the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country, and it’s a shame.”
If the disgraced former president had any empathy, his look of horror upon being fact-checked in real-time would have suggested that his dog died but the narcissist never had any pets… but he also never felt constrained by the facts, either.
“I don’t know about dogs and cats,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally from South Carolina who argued that the Republican candidate should have stuck to equally racist claims that women have been raped and murdered by immigrants who are in the country illegally. “That should be the face of a broken immigration system, not cats and dogs.”
Blood Tribe, a neo-Nazi extremist group, was among the early purveyors of the lie about immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets.
Thousands of Haitian immigrants have settled legally in the city after they fled political violence in the Caribbean island nation.
Vance shared the rumor on social media one day before the debate and instead of verifying whether it is accurate, Trump made this nonsense the most memorable moment in the 107 minute forum, which featured Harris calmly discussing issues and laughing at her thin-skinned and reality-challenged opponent.
So Trump showed up with utter nonsense instead of boning up on the issues, and Harris wiped the floor with his actions that took abortion rights away from American women, cut taxes on the rich without addressing imminent Social Security shortfalls, and raised costs to consumers with tariffs that Harris likened to “a 20 percent sales tax.”
Two day later, the poll showed Harris with a five percentage point lead among registered voters, just above the four-point advantage she had over Trump in an Aug. 21-28 Reuters/Ipsos poll.
Trump lies also include some whoppers concerning the economy, but despite the Republican’s carping and complaining about current financial conditions, the United States of America has the strongest economy in the world.
In the second quarter of 2024, the real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at a 3.0% annual rate. This is due in part to an increase in consumer spending.
Inflation has declined in response to the Federal Reserve’s actions, and is expected to be around 2.5% by the end of 2024.
Investors are optimistic the same macroeconomic tailwinds that fueled the stock market’s 2023 rally will propel the S&P 500 to new all-time highs in 2024.
Harris has plans to support democracy and protect American allies under threat from tyranny and terrorism, while Trump’s isolationist policies are a retreat from global leadership.
Harris said that she wants to restore the freedom to choose that was a constitutional guarantee for the 50 years while Roe v Wade defined abortion rights.
Trump falsely claimed in the debate that Democrats support abortions “after birth” and “executing” babies, ABC News anchor Linsey Davis mentioned during her real-time fact check, there is no state where it is legal to kill a baby after birth.
Trump falsely claimed “everybody” wanted abortion policy left up to the states, but Republican activists have called on elected officials to work toward a national abortion ban.
Trump’s running mate, Vance, said he would not support a national abortion ban and would veto such legislation if it passed while he was president.
