Still reeling from a terrible performance in his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, disgraced former President Donald Trump encountered a disaster in North Carolina, the battleground state Democrats have been eyeing as a prime target for flipping in the 2024 elections.
With just 42 days until Election Day, the campaign of North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor in the battleground state, is unraveling amid explosive revelations linking him to an incendiary adult website account in a scandal that couldn’t have come at a worse time for the GOP.
Trump made no mention of Robinson during his appearance Saturday at a rally in Wilmington, but the controversy surrounding CNN’s bombshell report on the contender’s graphic, offensive and racist online comments continued to dominate political discussions across the state.

For weeks, Harris and Democratic strategists have maintained that North Carolina is the most promising state for them to reclaim from Donald Trump’s 2020 victories. With memories of Trump’s chaotic presidency resurfacing, they are banking on Robinson’s shocking past to sway voters disenchanted with the current political climate.
The unraveling began when journalists exposed Robinson’s old posts from a pornographic website called Nude Africa, where he made appalling statements including a self-identification as a “Black Nazi” and a call for the reinstatement of slavery.
This is the same candidate who has positioned himself as a champion of traditional values and conservative principles. As if that weren’t enough, the posts also revealed details of an alleged extramarital affair, further staining his campaign.
In the wake of these revelations, Robinson’s campaign has faced a mass exodus of staff. Four senior members, including the campaign manager and general consultant, have resigned in recent days, leaving Robinson with a skeletal team just weeks before Election Day.
The Republican Governors Association has reportedly halted additional ad buys in the state, reflecting growing concern over Robinson’s viability as a candidate.
Even Trump, who once fervently endorsed Robinson, seems to be distancing himself. Notably absent from Trump’s recent rally in Wilmington, Robinson is now fighting an uphill battle against not just his opponents but the very narrative that has engulfed his campaign.
In response to the media frenzy, Robinson has attempted to shift the conversation, accusing reporters of peddling “15- to 20-year-old salacious false lies” while ignoring pressing issues. However, this deflection appears increasingly desperate.
Voters, especially women, are taking notice. Trump’s recent missteps, including a bizarre and unfounded lie on the debate stage about Haitian immigrants eating dogs and cats, further complicated his campaign narrative, as the focus turned back to Robinson’s extreme views.
With just six weeks until the election, the Republican Party’s prospects in North Carolina appear dim.
Local GOP leaders are fretting over the potential loss of their supermajority in the General Assembly, fearing that Robinson’s extremist rhetoric could alienate moderate voters. The party’s once-unified front is crumbling as the scandal deepens, threatening to engulf their entire campaign strategy.
As Harris and her team look to capitalize on this turmoil, Robinson’s campaign faces an existential crisis. The juxtaposition of his radical past against the backdrop of a contentious national climate could spell disaster for Republicans in North Carolina.
If Robinson’s scandal continues to dominate headlines, it may give Democrats the opening they need to reclaim a crucial battleground state.
