In a stunning display of cognitive dissonance, the New York Post Editorial Board has published a piece that attempts to delegitimize the monumental assault on democracy that transpired on January 6, 2021, by casting aspersions on former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney.
Their editorial, dated October 16, 2024, suggests that Cheney’s actions somehow diminish the severity of disgraced former President Donald Trump’s attempted coup.
This line of reasoning is not merely flawed; it is a dangerously misleading lie that turns the numerous acts of treason into a political advantage for Trump’s MAGA fascists.
It is telling that retired Marine Corps General John F. Kelly, who was Trump’s longest-serving White House chief of staff, revealed that the disgraced former President and current Republican nominee meets the definition of a fascist and would govern like a dictator if elected again.
The New York Post Editorial Board is choosing to contribute to the ruin of American democracy although the newspaper was founded by Alexander Hamilton, who helped give birth to this nation.
A Distraction from Reality
First, let’s be clear: the events of January 6 were not merely a “bad day” in American history; they were an unprecedented assault on the very foundations of our democracy.
Thousands of individual terrorists, fueled by lies about the election and Trump’s incendiary rhetoric, stormed the Capitol with the intention of overturning a lawful election.
The actions of this mob were not an isolated incident; they were the culmination of a years-long campaign to undermine public faith in democratic institutions, led by none other than Trump himself.
On January 6, 2021, the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., was attacked by a mob of terrorists who supported Trump in an attempted self-coup d’état two months after he was soundly defeated in the 2020 presidential election.
The New York Post’s editorial is an attempt to trivialize this reality by distracting attention from the lies, the violence, and the ugliness that replaced honesty and patriotism among most members of the GOP.
The New York Post editorial attempts to diminish the significance of the events by accusing Cheney of “shady” actions and disparaging her involvement in the fact-finding hearings that most Republicans in Congress never wanted to take place.
The implication that the motives behind Cheney’s efforts to expose the truth behind the January 6 insurrection are tainted by partisan interests overlooks the fact that she is a lifelong Republican whose loyalty to the nation is stronger than the cultlike attraction Trump has among most of her former colleagues.
This is not only an intellectually lazy argument but a dangerous one that seeks to absolve Trump and his followers of their culpability.
The planned, Trump-incited terrorist mob attack of Jan. 6, 2021, was an armed assault not just on the U.S. Capitol building, but also on democracy and the rule of law.
The New York Post editorial suggests that the January 6 insurrection was not Trump’s fault and seeks instead to blame one of his victims. Hundreds of prominent Republicans disavowed the treasonous ringleaders who bear true responsibility but most have decided to preserve their political viability within the new American Nazi Party, a gang that Trump owns.
Cheney’s Courage vs. Trump’s Treason
Liz Cheney has emerged as a rare voice of moral clarity within the Republican Party.
While many have chosen to bury their heads in the sand, she has boldly confronted the lies that have engulfed American politics.
The editorial asserts that Cheney’s texts and communications with Cassidy Hutchinson undermine the integrity of the January 6 hearings, an argument that misses a critical point: the pursuit of truth in the face of such overwhelming deceit is a public service, not a crime.
The Post is a newspaper that was founded in 1801 by Alexander Hamilton, but in November 1976, it was bought for $30.5 million by Australian Rupert Murdoch, the owner of hundreds of local, national, and international publishing outlets around the world, including The Wall Street Journal, 20th Century Fox, and the Fox News Channel, a 24-hour cable news station known for misinforming Americans .
In 1985, Murdoch went through the naturalization process to satisfy the legal requirement that only citizens were permitted to own American television stations, and in 2004, he announced that he was moving News Corporation headquarters from Australia to the United States.
While Trump often disparages people who come to this country in search of a better life, the threat from greedy immigrant billionaires like Murdoch, South Africa’s Elon Much and Germany’s Peter Theil is far more concrete and serious.
Trying to paint Cheney’s actions as manipulative and unethical, after her pricipled stand cost her a seat in Congress, is glaring hypocrisy from a publication owned by someone who is a foreigner only interest in this country as a place to make money.
What is truly unethical is the way the editorial seeks to shift blame away from those who conspired to illegally overturn the election.
The focus should be on Trump’s lies and and the broader implications of his actions, not on the motivations of those trying to reveal the truth.
The Real Consequences of January 6
The editorial board’s argument falls apart when faced with the sheer gravity of what transpired on January 6.
False allegations of witness tampering or sensationalized testimony pales in comparison to the thousands of lives endangered that day and the lasting damage done to public trust in our democratic institutions.
To suggest that Cheney’s actions are the primary concern is a profound misrepresentation of the stakes involved, although she may have done an end run around lawyers representing Pennington, New Jersey, native Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide who served as assistant to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows during the Trump administration. and was a witness that testified at the June 28, 2022 public hearings of the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack.
As Americans, we should be questioning how the Attorney General Merrrick Garland and others responsible for enforcing the law allowed criminals to escape accountability for their actions. Almost four years after the most sinister event—whose only parallel in American history is the Civil War—the prosecution of Trump and other MAGA traitors is far from complete.
The focus should be on ensuring that such an assault on democracy never happens again, rather than nitpicking the actions of those fighting for accountability.
Defending Democracy Requires Courage
The New York Post’s editorial seems intended in projecting a false narrative more than pursuing the truth.
Cheney’s actions, whether imperfect or not, should be viewed in the context of the struggle for democracy. If we are to defend our democratic institutions, we must encourage and support those who stand up against tyranny and deceit—no matter their political affiliations.
To claim that Cheney’s actions detract from the seriousness of January 6 is not only misguided; it is a disservice to the very democracy we must all strive to protect. Instead of undermining those who seek truth, we should rally behind them as we confront the dangerous forces that threaten our collective future.
