Two New Jersey residents among victims of New Orleans terror attack

Two New Jersey residents were victims in the deadly incident that unfolded early Wednesday morning on New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street, leaving 14 people dead and 35 others injured after a man allegedly drove a rented Ford F-150 truck through a crowd and later exchanged gunfire with police officers.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who was shot and killed by officers after firing on them.

The attack, which occurred around 1:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, has been described by officials as premeditated and allegedly inspired by the Islamic State group.

The FBI confirmed that Jabbar posted videos on social media hours before the incident, where he expressed support for the extremist group. A flag associated with the Islamic State was also found in the truck used in the assault.

Among the victims was 25-year-old William DiMaio from Holmdel, New Jersey, who was a conservative political activist who relocated to Hoboken.

DiMaio, an account executive with Audacy Inc., was the oldest of three children. His family described him as a “good, humble kid” who had a passion for life, citing his involvement in sports like lacrosse and his dedication to helping others.

Also killed in the attack was 28-year-old Martin “Tiger” Bech, a Princeton University graduate.

Bech, who had relocated to New York City to work for a capital markets firm, was visiting Louisiana for leisure, including hunting and fishing, when the tragic incident occurred.

Bech’s family, including his younger brother Jack, a wide receiver for Texas Christian University, expressed grief on social media, with Jack sharing a heartfelt tribute to his late brother.

According to authorities, Jabbar allegedly drove the truck through the crowded street, crashing it before exiting and firing on officers. Police returned fire, striking and killing Jabbar at the scene. Two officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire but are expected to survive.

Shamsud-Din Jabbar had a history of personal and financial difficulties, which have raised questions about the motives behind the attack. Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, had struggled in recent years with divorce, mounting debts, and the collapse of his real estate businesses. Records show he had been married three times and was experiencing significant financial distress, including falling behind on mortgage payments and accumulating credit card debt.

Background on Jabbar

Jabbar, originally from Texas, served in the U.S. Army from 2007 to 2020, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He had deployed to Afghanistan and later attended Georgia State University, where he earned a degree in computer information systems. In recent years, Jabbar had isolated himself from family members and friends, with his brother describing him as “calm” and “well-mannered” during their last interactions. However, Jabbar’s erratic behavior in recent months led to concerns among those close to him.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, seeking to understand what led to Jabbar’s radicalization and the premeditated nature of the attack. The FBI has confirmed that Jabbar’s actions were consistent with recent trends of attacks inspired by ISIS, making this one of the deadliest incidents linked to the group in the United States in recent years.

Community Reactions

The loss of life has sent shockwaves through the New Orleans community and beyond. Local officials, as well as friends and family of the victims, have expressed their heartbreak over the tragic events. A GoFundMe campaign set up to support Tiger Bech’s family and his injured friend has already raised over $79,000 as of Thursday afternoon.

Princeton University’s football program, where Bech was a former player, paid tribute to him, with head coach Bob Surace calling him a “ferocious competitor” and “beloved teammate.” Bech’s family described him as a caring and energetic individual who will be deeply missed by those who knew him.

The attack has also prompted renewed discussions about safety on Bourbon Street, especially during busy events like New Year’s celebrations. Local authorities have pledged to increase security measures moving forward to prevent further tragedies.

The investigation into Jabbar’s background and motivations is ongoing, with law enforcement working to piece together more information.
