In the first three weeks of his return to the White House, Donald Trump has unleashed a torrent of illegalities, authoritarian overreach, and blatant disregard for the rule of law, cementing his status as a president who views himself as a king.
But let us be clear: Donald Trump is not the King of America. He is a public servant bound by the Constitution, a document he has repeatedly trampled in his quest for unchecked power.
This administration’s actions have been met with a wave of judicial rebukes, exposing a presidency riddled with incompetence, cruelty, and corruption.
Trump’s opening weeks have been a legal disaster.
Federal judges across the country have blocked a rash of his executive orders, with some using scathing language to condemn his administration’s unconstitutional and ill-conceived policies.
Among the most egregious:
- The Ban on Birthright Citizenship: A cornerstone of Trump’s know-nothing nativist agenda, this order was swiftly blocked by U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour, who accused Trump of treating the rule of law as “an impediment to his policy goals.” The judge’s ruling was a stark reminder that no president is above the Constitution.
- The Freeze on Federal Grants and Loans: Trump’s attempt to withhold billions in congressionally approved funding was met with a judicial smackdown. A Rhode Island judge subsequently ruled that the administration violated a court order, hinting at potential penalties for this blatant disregard for the law.
- The Dismantling of USAID: Trump’s thuggish attempt to shutter the U.S. Agency for International Development was met with immediate objections from staffers and legal experts. USAID’s programs are funded by Congress, which set rules that must be followed before halting payments—rules Trump clearly ignored.
- The Transfer of Transgender Prisoners: A federal court blocked Trump’s cruel and unconstitutional order to transfer transgender prisoners to facilities where they would face a heightened risk of rape and other sexual violence. The ruling was a rare moment of humanity in an otherwise inhumane administration.
Trump’s disdain for checks and balances has been on full display as he illegally fires officials from independent agencies, violating both the law and the separation of powers. Among his most brazen acts:
- Firing EEOC Chair Charlotte Burrows: Trump’s removal of Burrows, along with EEOC Commissioner Jocelyn Samuels and FEC Chair Ellen Weintraub, was a direct violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which guarantees fixed terms for these commissioners. Trump’s actions were a blatant power grab, designed to silence critics and undermine the independence of these agencies.
- Ousting Gwynne Wilcox from the NLRB: Wilcox is now suing Trump for her illegal removal, citing the 1935 Supreme Court ruling in Humphrey’s Executor v. United States, which protects members of independent boards from being fired without cause. Trump’s actions were not just illegal—they were an assault on the very foundations of our democracy.
- Removing David Huitema from the Office of Government Ethics: Huitema, confirmed by the Senate to a five-year term, was ousted without cause, further eroding the safeguards designed to prevent corruption in the executive branch.
Trump’s alarming mass firing of inspectors general (IGs) across 17 federal agencies violated the Inspector General Act of 1978, which requires the president to provide 30 days’ notice to Congress before removing these independent watchdogs.
The IGs are tasked with rooting out corruption, fraud, and waste, and their removal is a clear attempt to shield the administration from accountability. Among the casualties:
- Michael Atkinson: The IG who handled the whistleblower complaint that led to Trump’s first impeachment. His firing was a transparent act of retaliation.
- IGs Investigating Trump’s Cabinet: Two IGs were actively investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao when they were removed. Their dismissals were a blatant attempt to obstruct justice.
By ignoring this law, Trump has shown once again that he views himself as unaccountable to anyone—Congress, the courts, or the American people.
Trump’s first three weeks have been a masterclass in authoritarianism. He has defied court orders, fired independent officials, and dismantled critical agencies—all while his allies suggest defying the judiciary altogether.
Vice President JD Vance and billionaire immigrant Elon Musk have both flirted with treasonous rhetoric, suggesting that the administration should ignore court rulings and plow ahead with its agenda.
This is not how democracy works.
The rule of law is not a suggestion—it is the foundation of our republic. Trump’s actions are a direct threat to that foundation, and the consequences could be catastrophic.
The American people deserve a government that works for them, not a president who views himself as a king.
Citizens must demand accountability at every turn. Congress must act to restore the balance of power, strengthen ethics laws, and ensure that no president can ever again wield power with such impunity.
Responsible Americanism is the commitment to upholding the values of equity, justice, and community well-being, ensuring that every action taken as a nation reflects a dedication to the common good and the protection of future generations.
Donald Trump is not the King of America. He is a president who has repeatedly broken the law, undermined our institutions, and betrayed the public trust.
It is up to you to hold him accountable—before it’s too late—because Republicans in Congress are not up to the job.
