Clark Township, community whose longtime mayor when was forced to resign after pleading guilty to corruption, is reeling from the news that a middle school teacher was arrested and charged with possession and distribution of child pornography.
The suspect, 48-year-old Matthew Serwedes, was a teacher at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School.
Serwedes was accused of possessing and distributing child sex abuse material via social media and a messaging platform less than three weeks after Sal Bonaccorso—who stirred controversy by making racist and sexist comments about police officers—resigned as mayor, a post he had held since 2001, over public corruption allegations
An investigation led authorities to arrest Serwedes at his home, where police seized electronic devices for forensic analysis.
In a statement from the Clark Public School District, they said it doesn’t believe the teacher involved any of his students.
“The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office has advised the District that there is no reason to believe that [Serwedes] had involved any Clark students in his activities,” Clark Superintendent Edward Grande said, adding that Serwedes, who has worked in the district for more than 20 years, was immediately suspended following his arrest on Tuesday.
The school district said the teacher was immediately suspended.
Salvatore Bonaccorso, the longtime mayor of Clark, pleaded guilty today in connection with his use of Clark employees for his private business, a landscaping and underground oil storage tank removal company.
