First, everyone at NJTODAY.NEWS wishes all our readers a happy Mother’s Day, but there’s another message we hope to share with you…
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we honor the relentless caregivers who nurture, protect, and sacrifice for their families.
Mothers don’t have the luxury of complacency; their role demands vigilance, foresight, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding their children’s future.
This same ethos must guide us as citizens. In 29 days, New Jersey’s primary election will test whether we, too, are willing to shoulder the responsibility of stewardship for our communities, state, and planet.
Mothers understand that vague promises won’t feed a hungry child or mend a broken bone.
Yet too often, our political discourse revolves around hollow buzzwords like “affordability” while sidestepping existential crises: a destabilizing climate, nuclear proliferation, oceans choked by plastic, drinking water poisoned by PFAS “forever chemicals,” and the looming specter of pandemics and economic collapse.
These are not abstract threats—they are emergencies demanding the same clear-eyed urgency a mother employs when her child is in danger.
Yet many treat democracy like a spectator sport, cheering for “their team” while ignoring the stakes. When Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, mothers were cheated by a political establishment that failed to recognize the ERA.
This passivity is a luxury we can no longer afford. Just as mothers cannot indulge in flights of fancy, voters must reject political distractions and demand accountability from those in power.
The politicians on the ballot June 4th will shape policies that determine whether New Jersey’s coastlines vanish, whether our schools teach resilience or ruin, and whether our communities thrive or succumb to chaos.
Mothers know that nurturing requires action—not wishful thinking.
They don’t wait for someone else to solve problems; they roll up their sleeves. Similarly, democracy only works when citizens engage with purpose.
Primary elections are where we decide whose values guide us. Often, the primary ballot is the only consequential opportunity to vote, thanks to gerrymandering and other kinds of cheating employed by the political establishment.
Will we reward leaders who are content with incrementalism or those ready to confront systemic threats head-on?
Will we vote for candidates funded by polluters and plutocrats, or pick those prioritizing people over profit?
This Mother’s Day, let’s honor the caregivers in our lives by embracing their example. Vote as if the future depends on it—because it does.
Research candidates’ records on climate, public health, and corporate influence. Attend town halls. Demand plans, not platitudes.
On June 4th, vote like a mother: with courage, clarity, and an unshakable resolve to protect what matters most.
Our democracy, like motherhood, is a pact between generations. Let’s uphold it.
