New Jersey officials outlined plans Tuesday to safeguard voting access ahead of the state’s June 10 primary election, including expanded resources for early voters beginning June 3.
Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin said the Department of Law and Public Safety will activate its Voter Protection Initiative to address potential civil rights violations during early voting and on Election Day. The program has operated during state elections since 2022.
“Free and fair elections require proactive protection of every citizen’s fundamental right to vote,” said Platkin.
Key components include:
- A team of attorneys available around-the-clock to assist county election officials
- Monitoring by cybersecurity officials for physical and digital threats
- Enforcement of laws prohibiting electioneering within 100 feet of polling places
Early in-person voting runs June 3-8.
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability will investigate reports of voter intimidation or fraud, working with local and federal partners when needed.
Voters encountering issues can contact:
- County election offices
- The state voter hotline: 1-877-658-6837
- New Jersey’s civil rights division for discrimination complaints
The measures follow updated guidance sent to law enforcement agencies in October 2024 about handling election-related situations.
State law prohibits interference with voters in designated “protective zones” at polling locations.
New Jersey’s primary election will be held June 10, with early voting available at designated locations beginning the preceding week.
