Bicyclist falls, is killed after two cars hit him in South Jersey

A bicyclist was hit by a car and killed Thursday night in Washington Township, Gloucester County, while trying to cross at a South Jersey intersection after falling on the road, officials said.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. on Black Horse Pike near Berlin Cross Keys Road. The cyclist died at the scene, officials said.

The driver stayed at the scene.

A Glassboro man in his late 30s was riding a bicycle when he tried to cross at the intersection, but he fell off of his bike in one of the lanes of the roadway, officials said.

A 2002 Chrysler minivan was going southbound on the Black Horse Pike when it ran over the fallen bicyclist, police reported. Then, moments later, a 2023 Honda CRV also hit the bicyclist.

Surveillance footage from a nearby business shows a bicyclist heading westbound and crossing the intersection when a southbound car on Black Horse Pike crashes into him.

“Honestly it didn’t look real. Like, I never seen anything like that before. It was crazy,” witness Ethan Vallecillo said. “The whole view was in front of me so I was just eating my food just looking and all I seen was a bike go flying and all I heard was the cars sounded like tires were rubbing really hard on the road.”

The southbound lanes of Black Horse Pike were closed because of the crash.
