So the spineless Senate Democrats surrendered
After Democrats won landslide victories in New Jersey, Virginia, and New York City, the party leaders responded by pulling the rug out from the nation’s reason for such public support.
They abandoned the government shutdown and their demands that Trump Republicans restore $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts plus extend Obamacare subsidies that expired with the year end.
This was a fight that needed fighting. Without health insurance coverage, thousands of Americans will needlessly suffer and die.
Shockwaves are rippling through the economy as premium spikes are driving working class families to go without insurance coverage, a risk that puts them in danger several ways.
Foregoing medical treatment and regular check ups can result in missing opportunities to cure problems before they become life threatening maladies.
Financially, the fastest route to bankruptcy is an uninsured hospital stay.
If someone puts off a doctor’s visit when the next pandemic begins, it could spread a deadly plague far wider than it might have if checked earlier.
This would have been a good battlefield for Democrats if they had not so casually surrendered.
Three out of four public opinion survey respondents said they were concerned about the shutdown of the federal government, but twice as many independent voters blamed the Republicans
Americans also disapproved of the Trump administration tearing down the east wing of the White House to make way for a 90,000 square-foot ballroom as well as his draconian immigration enforcement tactics.
The government shutdown crippled some of Trump’s policies and stopped him from enriching his allies at taxpayers expense.
Jusr when it looked like the administration and congressional Republicans were about to open up to a compromise, the Democrats folded for no reason.
A lawsuit is one of those things nobody wants, but anyone who gets stuck with one definitely doesn’t want to lose it.
There’s no doubt that the government shutdown is undesirable, but that’s why it makes no sense that the prevailing side surrendered. Trump made his bed but the opposition gave him a free pass to continue everything that he was doing wrong.
The party in power has a lot of power, but the other side doesn’t have none. Democrats in Congress, particularly in the Senate, have emasculated themselves and save Trump the bother.
They let themselves be governed by fear. That’s how America got into this mess.
It’s time to elect leaders with courage and common sense because we face a variety of existential threats and our government should be trying to save the world instead of killing our own citizens, depriving children of education, and using war as the first tool for negotiation.
Unfortunately, the people we elected are too busy soliciting donations to do any real thinking.
