Juvenile charged with murder after 14-year-old boy died from gunshot wound to his back

Teenage male in Lakewood died from a single gunshot to his back

A dispute so petty it reportedly began over a sweater and a book bag spiraled into deadly violence Sunday night, leaving one teenage boy shot in the back on a city street and another juvenile behind bars on murder charges.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the suspected shooter, also a minor, was arrested and charged as a juvenile with murder and related weapons offenses following the 8:17 p.m. shooting in the area of Pearl Street.

The victim, whose name and exact age have not been released, was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus but died from a single gunshot wound to the back.

While prosecutors remained tight-lipped Monday about the relationship between the two boys or a possible motive, local news reports painted a grim picture of the circumstances leading to the violence.

Citing sources, The Lakewood Scoop reported the fatal shooting erupted from an altercation over a sweater and a book bag. If true, the killing represents a harrowing escalation over personal property, leaving a family to mourn a child and a community to grapple with the fragility of young life.

Responding officers arrived at the scene to find the wounded juvenile. He was quickly transported for emergency medical treatment, but the medical staff was unable to save him.

The suspect was taken into custody following a joint investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, the Lakewood Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.

The accused is currently being held at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center. He faces charges of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Under New Jersey statute N.J.S.A. 2A:4A-60, authorities are prohibited from releasing the names of juveniles charged in delinquency matters or additional details regarding the case.

The precise chain of events that led to the shooting remains under investigation. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the investigating agencies in the case.

Authorities have appealed to the public, asking anyone who witnessed the incident on Pearl Street or who has information to contact the Lakewood Township Police Department.

As the legal process begins for the accused, the charges remain mere accusations. Under the law, the juvenile defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

But for the victim’s family and a shaken Lakewood neighborhood, the cold finality of a Sunday night shooting has already delivered its verdict.
