Pope Leo XIV has condemned President Donald Trump’s threat to destroy “a whole civilization” in Iran. The pope called it “truly unacceptable” and a moral question, not just a matter of international law.
The Christian leader was responding after Trump launched an unprovoked war with Iran and then issued an ultimatum demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump posted that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran did not comply.
The pope did not name Trump. But he did not need to. He said attacks on civilian infrastructure are a sign of hatred and destruction.
He urged Americans to call their congressional representatives and ask for peace. He called the war unjust.
Trump responded by attacking the pope personally. He called him a liberal. He called him weak on crime. He said the American priest from Chicago only became pope because of him.
“If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican,” Trump wrote. He also said he does not want a pope who criticizes the president.
Pope Leo gave his answer aboard a flight to Algeria. He told Reuters he has no fear of the Trump administration. He said he does not want a debate. But he said the gospel message is being abused.
“Blessed are the peacemakers,” he said. He promised to keep speaking out loud against war.
That same weekend, Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus.
The picture shows him in a white robe, one hand glowing, the other healing a sick man. Eagles, fireworks, and the Statue of Liberty fill the background. He posted it shortly after attacking the pope.
For once, some of Trump’s religious supporters spoke out.
Megan Basham, a conservative Christian writer, called it “OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy.” She said he needs to take it down and ask forgiveness from God. Isabel Brown, a Catholic podcaster with the Daily Wire, called it disgusting and unacceptable. Michael Knowles said the president should delete the picture. Riley Gaines said God shall not be mocked. A White House official, speaking anonymously, said it was sacrilegious.
But these are the same supporters who have spent years defending everything else.
They defended a man who bragged about sexual assault. They defended a convicted felon. They defended a president who separated children from their parents. They looked away when he mocked the disabled and called immigrants animals. Now some of them draw the line at a fake picture of themselves.
The line, it turns out, is not at cruelty or lying or war. It is at bad art.

The United States has strayed from any moral path. What we are watching is neofascism. It has a strongman who demands loyalty above all. It has a base that calls itself Christian but worships power. It has a leader who threatens to wipe out entire civilizations and then posts pictures of himself as the Son of God.
The religious zealots who support Trump are not defending the faith. They have abandoned it. They have traded the gospel for a seat at the table. They have chosen a malevolent liar over a pope who quotes Scripture and tells the truth about war.
Pope Leo is not afraid of Trump. He said so himself. He sees what Trump is.
The question is why so many American Christians cannot say the same. They are afraid. Or they are complicit. Either way, they have lost the right to call themselves the moral majority. They are the moral failure. And the country is paying the price.
