TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Senate President Nicholas Scutari said Wednesday that the results of Tuesday’s midterm elections showed voters in the state and nationwide want a government focused on lowering costs and holding power to account.

In a statement released by the New Jersey Senate Democrats, Scutari congratulated the state’s newly elected Democratic officials on what he called “historic victories.”

“Last night, voters in New Jersey and across the country sent an unmistakable message: government exists to serve the people, not any one person, and they are eager for a new era of progress in American politics,” Scutari said.

Scutari pointed to Democratic wins beyond New Jersey, citing Michigan, Texas and Georgia, and said successful candidates had listened to their communities. He said the desire for change can “transcend political boundaries.”

The Senate leader said voters’ priorities were clear.

“Their expectations are clear: families are counting on us to lower costs, hold power to account, and restore the promise of the American dream,” he said.

Scutari said he and his leadership team are prepared to act and pledged to seek common ground. He said he plans to work with Senate colleagues, New Jersey’s congressional delegation, state leaders and people in other states to follow through on those commitments.

The statement did not identify specific races or legislation.
