Reforestation cooled the eastern U.S.

A groundbreaking study published in the journal “Earth’s Future” reveals that reforestation efforts since the 1930s have had a substantial cooling effect in the eastern United States.

This research sheds light on how afforestation has mitigated regional warming, standing in contrast to the general warming trend observed in other parts of North America over the same period.

The study, led by research leader Mallory Barnes and her team, provides compelling evidence that forests in the eastern U.S. have significantly cooled the land surface by one to two degrees per year compared to surrounding grasslands or farmland. Particularly noteworthy is the finding that young forests, aged between 20 to 40 years, exhibit the strongest cooling effect.

Before European settlement, much of the eastern United States was blanketed by forests. However, between the 18th and 20th centuries, extensive deforestation occurred due to forestry and agricultural activities. It wasn’t until the 20th century that reforestation efforts began to reverse this trend.

The authors of the study highlight the multifaceted benefits of reforestation, emphasizing its role not only in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere but also in adaptation to rising temperatures by cooling surface and air temperatures over large areas. Reforestation, they argue, has contributed to the historically slow pace of warming in the eastern U.S.

Dr. Barnes underscores the importance of understanding the cooling effects of forests, stating, “This knowledge is key not only for large-scale reforestation projections aimed at climate mitigation but also plans for initiatives like urban tree planting.”
