Trenton teen arrested by the US Marshals for shooting death of Luis Marrero

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged after officials say he shot and killed a 47-year-old man in Trenton, New Jersey, earlier this month.

The suspect —whose identity has not been revealed— was apprehended in Norfolk, Virginia, by the United States Marshals Service and is awaiting extradition to Mercer County.

Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri announced Thursday that an investigation conducted by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force (MCHTF) and the Trenton Shooting Response Team led to the arrest of the teenage suspect for the shooting death of Luis Torres Marrero.

According to officials, on July 9, around 12:25 a.m., Trenton police responded to the 200 block of East Hanover Street following a report of a sick or injured person.

Upon arrival, officers found Marrero suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries on July 14.

Marrero was the 15th murder victim in Trenton so far this year.

The teenage suspect has been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Despite the charges, every defendant is presumed innocent until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office has urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact MCHTF Detective Zachary Ortman at (609) 273-2451 or Sergeant William Jett Jr. at (609) 331-5010. Information can also be emailed to mchtftips@mercercounty.org.
