Jamesburg councilman’s racism and bizarre Facebook rants draw scrutiny

Jamesburg Councilman Bertin Lefkovic is facing explosive new scrutiny after a series of unhinged Facebook posts surfaced, revealing a pattern of inflammatory and racially charged commentary that critics say exposes his true motivations.

Lefkovic became the first Democratic elected official to call on Assemblywoman Tennille McCoy (D-Hamilton) to resign Friday amid allegations of a toxic workplace and ethics violations — while simultaneously admitting his original vote for her was based on race.

“I am embarrassed to admit that I allowed my preference for a woman of color over a white male candidate to be the main reason that I voted the way that I did, which was a disservice to both candidates,” Lefkovic said in a published report.

But the stunning confession is only the tip of the iceberg.

The Pattern Emerges

In a Facebook post dated July 5, 2025, Lefkovic attacked New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and bizarrely compared his own teenage college applications to the minority status of a sitting elected official.

“When I was applying to colleges back in the 80s, I had considered checking the box that would have given me minority status, because my Mom was born in Trinidad,” Lefkovic wrote. “Even though I was just a teenager, I was smart enough to know that this would not fly. Zohran Mamdani should have known better and the same voters of color who rejected him during the Democratic Party primary election should continue to reject him.”

The post, which Lefkovic shared publicly on his Facebook page, dismissed the voters of color who supported Mamdani and suggested they should continue rejecting him in a general election.

The ‘Concentration Camp’ Meltdown

Two months earlier, in a May 15, 2025 Facebook post, Lefkovic launched a vicious attack on a fellow Democrat from Ocean County, invoking the Holocaust and suggesting he would end up in a concentration camp.

“Thank you for illustrating my point,” Lefkovic wrote. “I get that living in Ocean County, you think that you have nothing to lose, but it is because of people like you that the Democratic Party of New Jersey will probably nominate Ras Baraka as its gubernatorial nominee and help to elect Jack Ciatarelli or Bill Spadea as our state’s next Governor. Meanwhile, people like me will wind up in a concentration camp, while nothing happens to people like you.”

The post tagged political journalists Matt Friedman and Max Pizarro.

The Analilia Mejia Obsession

In a November 26, 2025 Facebook post, Lefkovic continued his long-running feud with Congresswoman Analilia Mejia, a former national political director for Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign.

“Am I the only Bernie Sanders delegate to the 2016 Democratic National Convention who remembers what Analilia Mejia did in 2020?” Lefkovic wrote. “She decapitated Bernie Sanders’ Presidential campaign… She cut backroom deals with party bosses to have an open primary election at the Presidential level, while maintaining the bracketing system for the rest of the ballot. Any current or former Bernie Sanders supporter who supports Analilia Mejia in CD11 is supporting a fake progressive who is more interested in serving her own ambitions than being an honest and truthful advocate for progressive values.”

Our Revolution Slams ‘Stupid’ Publicity Stunt

An Our Revolution official, the Bernie Sanders-aligned progressive group that previously distanced itself from Lefkovic after he invoked the organization’s name while maligning Congresswoman Mejia, said it is not surprising that the councilman judged McCoy before the inquiry into the lawmaker’s behavior is complete.

“It’s just like Bertin Lefkovic to jump to conclusions just so he can get publicity,” the Our Revolution official said. “He’s gotta be the first to get publicity at someone’s expense, but in his rush to get coverage he goes and says something stupid.”

The New Jersey chapter of Our Revolution expelled Lefkovic after he invoked the group’s name while maligning Mejia.

The Resignation Demand

Lefkovic framed his call for McCoy’s resignation as a matter of constituent service.

“For the good of Jamesburg Borough and the other towns that are part of New Jersey’s 14th legislative district, it is my opinion and my opinion alone that Assemblywoman McCoy should resign her office immediately,” he said.

The demand follows a report detailing allegations that McCoy created a toxic workplace, verbally abused employees, and used taxpayer-funded staff for personal errands. McCoy has denied all wrongdoing, blaming “disgruntled former employees.”

Lefkovic’s racial admission — combined with his documented history of inflammatory Facebook rants — has raised serious questions about whether his call for resignation is rooted in genuine concern or something far more troubling.
