BELLEVILLE, N.J. — A Belleville police officer fired his weapon after a driver struck him with a vehicle during a traffic stop Oct. 25, and the vehicle then fled, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

No one was struck by gunfire, according to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II, whose office is investigating the police-involved shooting.

Two Belleville officers were conducting a motor vehicle stop at about 7:45 p.m. at Mill Street and Union Avenue when the driver struck one of them with his vehicle, authorities said. That officer then discharged his weapon, and the vehicle left the scene, the prosecutor’s office said.

Both officers were taken to Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville with injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said.

The prosecutor’s office did not identify the driver or the officers, and it did not say whether anyone had been arrested or charged.

The investigation is ongoing, and no additional information was available, the office said.
