TRENTON, N.J. — Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Wednesday dismissed a subpoena issued by House Republicans as “political theater,” accusing them of playing games less than two weeks before the midterm elections.
In a statement released by the governor’s office Oct. 21, Sherrill tied the subpoena to what she described as an “MVC registration issue from 2023” and defended her administration’s handling of it.
“I promised that when we discover a problem, we communicate the facts and fix it – and I meant it,” Sherrill said. “From the moment we discovered the MVC registration issue from 2023, we took action immediately, went above and beyond in making agency-wide reforms, and have been transparent every step of the way.”
She said those steps were taken so that New Jersey residents “can feel confident that we are running the strongest and fairest election in our country.”
Sherrill directed her criticism at President Donald Trump and U.S. Reps. Jeff Van Drew and Jim Jordan, whom she called Trump’s “enablers.” She said they were “using their congressional committee not to do the work of the people, but for political theater.”
“Instead of actually doing anything to make our elections safer or addressing issues Americans care about, like skyrocketing prices, Washington Republicans are choosing to play political games just thirteen days before the midterm elections,” Sherrill said.
The statement did not describe what records or testimony the subpoena seeks, which committee issued it or when a response is due.
“I remain focused on keeping New Jersey’s elections free, fair, and secure and driving down costs for New Jerseyans,” the governor said.
